What to Compost

What to Compost

Question: What should I be composting?

Answer: The simple answer is anything that is organic. But some additions decompose better than others. The big four are kitchen scraps, grass clippings, leaves and garden waste. Many other things can add a wonderful nutrient mix to the piles. Seaweed is an almost perfect addition of micro-nutrients. Manure adds good nitrogen. But do not add dog or cat manure as it can harbour harmful bacteria. Shredded cardboard and paper add carbon. An important principle is to add components in moderation. One of the most fun discussions among the composting crowd is what bizarre things you have composted. Got something weird to compost? Try a small experimental batch and get ready to brag!
